Happiness is a Byproduct

I recently had lunch with my three children.

Frances and her 3 children when they were young.

Afterwards, I found myself thinking about happiness.

Nothing for me was more challenging than being a mother. And nothing is more rewarding and satisfying and just brings me so much joy and happiness than my children.

What I've learned about happiness is...

"Happiness is the byproduct of a life of purpose and meaning."

Before recovery, I used to try to generate happiness through pleasure seeking. Alcohol. Drugs. Parties. What I would describe as fun.

Today, happiness is feeling proud of myself for the things I've worked hard to achieve. It's the satisfaction that comes from reaching my goals.

My children are happy, healthy, and they know they're loved by both their parents unconditionally. Because of this, they thrive in their lives. Whatever obstacles come up, they know they're not alone in facing any of their problems. They have all the support and love and direction that they could ever need... or want, sometimes.

I'm so grateful for my children. I sacrificed so much for them to be the people they are today. And I'm so proud of all of us that we've come this far.

Honestly, if I never experience any other success other than seeing my children thrive in their lives, I still feel like a success.

An Invitation

If you're struggling with feeling happy, maybe don't look for happiness.

Look for purpose.

Look for meaning.

Look for a way to use your gifts to help other people.

You may discover what happiness is for you.
